چکیده

This paper presents an approach to information access based on spatiotemporal indexing. We describe GeoNODE, a “news on demand” system that visualizes news stories and other articles in terms of chronological time lines, geographical maps, and spatiotemporal animations. This spatiotemporal indexing is critically informed by our information extraction system, Alembic. This paper thus covers several dimensions of the technological partnership between GeoNODE and Alembic. We start with the end product, the display of spatiotemporally indexed documents, and work our way back through the various aspects of information extraction that underlie the indexing. We focus especially on those extraction tasks that operate at a common semantic level across diverse document sources and diverse languages.

Exploiting Visual Similarities for Ontology Alignment

Ontology alignment is the process where two different ontologies that usually describe similar domains are ’aligned’, i.e. a set of correspondences between their entities, regarding semantic equivalence, is determined. In order to identify these correspondences several methods and metrics that measure semantic equivalence have been proposed in literature. The most common features that these met...

Towards Cross-Media Feature Extraction

In this paper we describe past and present work dealing with the use of textual resources, out of which semantic information can be extracted in order to provide for semantic annotation and indexing of associated image or video material. Since the emergence of semantic web technologies and resources, entities, relations and events extracted from textual resources by means of Information Extract...

Text Mining Support for Semantic Indexing and Analysis of A/V Streams

The work described here concerns the use of complementary resources in sports video analysis; soccer in our case. Structured web data such as match tables with teams, player names, score goals, substitutions, etc. and multiple, unstructured, textual web data sources (minute-by-minute match reports) are processed with an ontology-based information extraction tool to extract and annotate events a...

Content-based retrieval from digital video

There is already a huge demand for efficient image indexing and content-based retrieval. With TV going digital, advances in real-time video decompression, easy access to the Internet and the availability of cheap mass storage and fast graphics adaptor cards, digital video will become the next “big” media. Unfortunately, automatic indexing and feature extraction from digital video is even harder...

Ontology Generation through the Fusion of Partial Reuse and Relation Extraction

Ontology generation—a process to automatically create ontologies from existing knowledge sources—has become a key issue with the emergence of the semantic web. Though many researchers are trying to automate this process by exploiting machine learning and data mining techniques, the results remain under exploration. At the same time, when more and more ontologies are available online, it is impo...
